A breadboard lets you build and change circuits with no soldering — just push components and wires into the holes. But those holes connect in a specific pattern, and understanding it is the difference between a working circuit and an afternoon of confusion.
How the holes connect
- The middle rows: each row of 5 holes (labelled a–e or f–j) is connected horizontally. Put two component legs in the same row and they’re joined.
- The centre gap: the trench down the middle splits the two halves. It’s sized so a chip (IC) straddles it with each side of legs on its own rows.
- The side rails: the long lines marked + and − run vertically down the whole board. Use one for 5V power and one for ground, and you can tap power anywhere.
Building your first circuit
- Run a jumper from the Arduino’s 5V to the red (+) rail, and GND to the blue (−) rail.
- Push an LED across two different rows (long leg = positive).
- Add a resistor from the LED’s positive row to the + rail, and a wire from its negative row to the − rail.
- Power up — the LED lights. You just built a circuit with no soldering.

Common breadboard mistakes
- Putting both legs of a component in the same row — that short-circuits it. Straddle two rows.
- Forgetting the power rails aren’t linked across the gap — some boards split the rails in the middle; bridge them with a wire if needed.
- Loose thin wires — solid-core jumper wires grip better than frayed strands.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to solder anything?
No — that’s the whole point. Breadboards are reusable and solderless.
Why isn’t my circuit working?
Nine times out of ten a leg is in the wrong row, or power/ground isn’t reaching the rails. Re-check the row pattern above.
Can I power the breadboard directly?
Yes — a breadboard power-supply module clips onto the rails and gives you 3.3V or 5V without the Arduino.
